The new plant in Changchun will be the first production site in China where only all-electric Audi models will roll of the line. With an annual capacity of more than 150,000 cars, the factory will play a key role in the continued electrification of Audi's product portfolio for the Chinese market. It will produce all-electric vehicles based on Audi's PPE (Premium Platform Electric) platform co-developed with Porsche. Three models will be introduced to the plant in the first phase, including the A6 e-tron sedan and the Q6 e-tron SUV.
Production areas at the plant will include a press shop, body construction, paint shop, and final assembly line in addition to an in-house battery assembly. A completely new IT architecture will be put into place to network all site processes.
Audi signed a MoU (memorandum of understanding) with FAW Group in October 2020 to jointly produce premium NEVs in China through a joint venture, namely, Audi FAW New Enery Vehicle Co., Ltd.
The joint venture was incorporated in March 2021, according to the corporate database Tianyancha. FAW Group owns 40% of the joint venture, while Volkswagen and Audi own the other 60%. It is the first cooperation company with a majority interest held by Audi in China.
